Indian Coal Import Climbs by 11% in Apr’16

Increased coal demand from Indian power and steel producers and restocking before monsoon resulted in higher coal import during the month.

India, one of the largest coal consumers in the globe, imported about 20.5 MnT coal (pet coke included) with a considerable growth of 11% in Apr’16. Besides, the country’s total yearly coal import up by 1% from 20.3 MnT in Apr’15.

Rising coal demand from power and steel sector along with ongoing coal refilling before monsoon resulted to rise in coal import during the month. The country recorded a highest coal import in Apr’16 since the starting of 2016.

As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total import, the country imported 15 MnT non-coking coal (up by 7%), 4 MnT coking coal (up by 16%) and about 0.45 MnT coke & anthracite in Apr’16. About 1.2 MnT Pet coke imported majorly supplied by USA and Saudi Arabia.

India has been showing a significant rise in coal import amid rush trade activities during the period, where Indian importers are busy to secure stock before monsoon.

Major exporting countries to India in Apr’16

Indonesia, the biggest conventional source of the country, supplied about 9.2 MnT of coal, registered a growth of 3% against Mar’16.

India purchased most of its coal from other major supplier countries such as Australia, South Africa, USA, Russia and China. These nations had supplied about 4 MnT, 3.7 MnT, 1 MnT, 0.6 MnT and 0.4 MnT respectively to India.

Major discharging ports and importers in Apr’16

Mundra, India’s biggest ports in dry fuel handling, received the highest volume of 2.5 MnT with a rise of 31% in Apr’16. Other eastern ports of the country, Krishnapatnam, Paradip, Dhamra and Gangavaram received 2 MnT, 1.7 MnT, 1.3 MnT and 1.2 MnT of coal in Apr’16.

Quantity in MnT

Companies like Adani Enterprises, JSW Steel, Adani Power, Essar Steel, CGPL, SAIL, Agarwal Coal and Tata Steel imported large quantities of about 1.7 MnT, 1.6 MnT, 1 MnT, 1 MnT, 0.8 MnT, 0.7 MnT, 0.7 MnT and 0.6 MnT respectively in Apr’16.
