Odisha Iron Ore Production Up by 62% in FY16

State’s merchant iron ore production increased sharply by 82% while captive iron ore production grew by 20% in FY16.

Iron ore production in India’s largest iron ore producing state has witnessed significant increase of 62% Y-o-Y in last fiscal and was recorded at 75.3 MnT in FY16. Temporary suspension of mining operations imposed in state in FY15 crippled the state’s iron ore production pulling it down to 46.6 MnT. But contrastingly, FY16 observed resumption of mining operations at banned mines and improvement in production at existing mines which resulted in considerable increase in state’s ore production.

1. Rungta Mines remained the largest merchant iron ore producer at 17.6 MnT. Rise in production post capacity enhancement at its mines namely- Jajang, Oraghat and Sanindupur resulted in increased production
2. Serajuddin Mines remained the 2nd largest merchant iron ore miner at 10.15 MnT. Other major miners were Indrani Patnaik (3.9 MnT) and KJS Ahluwalia (3.6 MnT)
3. State owned miner-Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) registered 84% Y-o-Y increase in production and stood at 4.2 MnT
4. Captive iron ore production increased nearly by around 20% Y-o-Y in FY16. Among captive miners, Tata Steel remained the largest iron ore producer at 9.3 MnT
