In a recently issued notification dated 18 Mar’16, Central Empowered Committee has approved to increment in permissible annual production in the ten mining leases. Earlier the technical committee constituted by Department of Mines & Geology had recommended for considering the increase in permissible annual production.
However, the state govt. will ensure that the sum total of annual production from all the leases does not exceed 30 MnT. In case the production exceeds 30 MnT the lease wise annual production of all the leases including that of present 10 leases will automatically stand reduced on pro rata basis.

Karnataka is India’s third largest iron ore producing state after Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Karnataka’s iron ore production dropped significantly by about 65% in FY12 over interim mining ban imposed in Bellary district of Karnataka.
In FY16, we expect Karnataka iron ore production to remain at 25 MnT. Karnataka has iron ore production cap of 30 MnT (25 MnT in Bellary district and 5 MnT in districts of Chitradurga and Tumkur.
