Flat Steel Imports Rise by 31% at Kandla and Mundra Port in Mar’16

While both HRC and CRC imports at Kandla/Mundra port surged by 12%, highest increase was registered in case of plates import which surged by 87% in March against previous month.

India’s total HRC/Plates import under HS code 7208 registered an increase of 52% from 0.23 MnT in Feb’16 to 0.35 MnT in Mar’16.

While India’s CRC import under HS code 7209 increased by 5% from 0.076 MnT in Feb’16 to 0.08 MnT in Mar’16.

India imported about 56,583 tonnes of HRC (up by 12.18% M-o-M), 48,089 tonnes of CRC (up by 11.9% M-o-M) and 57,397 tonnes of Plates (up by 87.3% M-o-M) at Kandla & Mundra port in Mar’16.

As it usually takes about two months time for import shipments to reach India, LCs for these March deliveries must have opened before 5 Feb’16 (MIP announcement).
Thus the impact of MIP on steel imports can be seen only in the import numbers of April and thereafter.
