Non-coking Coal Import Down by 9% in FY16

India, the 2nd greatest non-coking coal shipper around the world, imported 13.9 MnT of non-coking coal in the last month of the fiscal. With this, import figures totalled to 167.6 MnT for FY16.

 Higher yield of domestic coal has led to fall in India’s non-coking import by 9% for FY16 against the previous year. The nation’s import of non-coking coal was assessed at 167.6 MnT in the fiscal against and 183.7 MT in FY15 due to sufficient production by Coal India to fulfill needs of power producer.

Although, CIL’s production has increased considerably, India’s total coal production will see a declension as the auctioned captive coal block hasn’t started operating as expected, rather it ended up with new obstacles. There will be a sharp fall in coal production through captive blocks, affecting overall coal production.

It is to be noticed that in FY15, India’s coal production stood at 612 MnT, in which CIL’s production  was 494 MnT, SCCL’s 52.5 MnT and 65.6 MnT was produced by other captive blocks. However, this year, CIL produced a total of 536 MnT and SCCl’s production was assessed at 60.3 MnT. Whereas, sources say that coal production from other captive blocks will land somewhere near 15 MnT.

Mounting indigenous production has influenced non-coking import to India fundamentally. The country has imported 13.9 MnT of coal in the last month of FY16. Non-coking import fell in Mar’16  by 11% against Mar’15. However, import grew by 11% against Feb’16.

Major discharging ports in Mar’16

All out imported non-coking coal exchanged WCI was around 8.4 MnT and rest 5.5 MnT touched base in the ECI. Mundra and Krishnapatnam ports were the important destinations for holding non-coking coal import for the month. They got around 1.8 MnT and 1.5 MnT of material in Mar’16 against 1.6 MnT and 1.5 MnT in Feb’16 respectively.

Top non-coking coal exporters in Mar’16

Indonesia and South Africa were the major non-coking coal exporters to India for the month. Indonesia traded around 8.8 MnT of non-coking coal, enrolling an enormous growth of 8.7% against the previous month. In the meantime, South Africa exchanged around 3.3 MnT of non-coking coal; down by 17.9% on monthly basis.
