Manganese ore import by India have fallen by 14% M-o-M in Feb’16 and is recorded at 119,542 MT in Feb’16. In Jan’16, Indian manganese ore import was recorded at 139,000 MT in Jan’16.
Largest exporter to India in Feb’16 was South Africa at 62,060 MT, followed by Australia at 44,644 MT.
SteelMint learned from market participants that most Alloy producers preferred to procure higher grade material, as it was being offered at very attractive prices to India in Feb’16.

Although, in March’16 very few shipments are expected to arrive in India as ore prices have increased and most of the material has been diverted to China, who has resumed buying as stock at ports have cleared. Chinese demand also plays a dominant role in determining prices of manganese ore.
Indian manganese alloy imports likely to be around 2.05 MnT in FY16
India imported a total of 2.9 MnT in FY15 out of which 1.98 MnT was imported from South Africa, 0.7 MnT from Australia and 0.2 MT from Gabon, according to DGFT (Director General Foreign Trade).
In FY16 (Apr-Feb) India imported a total of 1.88 MnT out of which 1 MnT was imported from South Africa, 0.38 MnT from Australia and 0.4 MnT from Gabon, according to DGFT.
