China's steel production drops in Jan-May'24, albeit at slower pace

China’s Top-7 crude steel producing provinces in Jan-May’24

According to data kept with BigMint, four of the top seven steel-producing provinces in China continued to exhibit a y-o-y decline in January through May of 2024. Volumes decreased overall by 1% during this period, from 445 million tonnes (mnt) over the same five months in 2023 to 439 million tonnes (mnt). But in May 2024, production increased 2.7% year over year. The second-largest producer, Jiangsu, reported flat year-over-year volume sales at 52 million t.With a total production of 87 mnt (92 mnt in 2023), Shangdong (-1%), Liaoning (-8%), and Shanxi (-10%) all continued to drop year over year. Together, Guanxi and Guangdong produced 15% and 7% more than before, totaling 35 million tons (32 million tons).
