Truckers Reject Transportation Rates Offered by Goan Govt

In a meeting held yesterday (5 Jan’16), truck owners rejected the proposal of transportation rates offered by Goan chief minister Mr. Laxmikant Pareskar, Directors of Mines department and All Goa Truck Owners Association (AGTOA).

Mr. Laxmikant Pareskar proposed to the truck owners the transportation rates in three slabs which is as follows-INR 9/MT per km for 1st 10 kms, INR 8.20/MT per km for 11- 20 kms & INR 8/MT per kms for above 20 kms.

Some truck owners in Goa under All Goa Truck Owners Association (AGTOA) had created a crisis and stopped transportation of iron ore from Vedanta Sesa iron ore site in Goa which has hampered the export shipments. A section of truck owners are demanding a hike in the iron ore transportation rates from the rates that the company has offered to pay them of INR 8/MT per km.

The truckers, had come down from their original demand of INR 17.32/ MT per km to INR 11.27/MT per km.

As per the view of company officials the company is already burdened with the falling global iron ore prices and tax structure which has made the situation further unfavourable.

The ongoing strike of truck owners since beginning of last month has adveresely impacted company’s export shipments. Last month observed only single iron ore export shipment from Vedanta of 87,000 MT to China. As per customs data, till date there is no expected iron ore export vessel of Vedanta.

If the situation persists, iron ore exports from Goa may be hit badly as Vedanta was the first mining company to resume iron ore exports from Goa.
