Expert Appraisal Committee will Consider EC Grant Proposals of JSW, Essar Steel and Ardent

Bhubaneswar: The Expert Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests will consider the proposal of country’s leading steel producer JSW’s proposed 10 million tonnes per Annum (mtpa) Steel plant and 900 MW captive power plant in Sonahatu Block in Ranchi district of Jharkhand for grant of Environment Clearance (EC) on 30th of this month. Last March, the company has applied for grant of EC along with the final Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report and compliance of all the Terms of Reference (ToR) along with public hearing proceedings as prescribed by the ministry.

As per the original proposal, JSW steel would set up the 10 mtpa steel project at an area of 3800 acres. The steel project includes setting up of 29.0 MT/ year Beneficiation Plant, a 8 mtpa  pellet plant, 6 mt/annum coke oven plant, 3X5200 m3 Blast furnace. The Company will set up a 900 MW coal fired captive power plant and a township. The company plans to invest 35000 Crore in the project.

Apart from JSW, the EAC will also consider a number of industrial projects including the expansion plan of Kamdhenu Ispat ( in Rajastan), replacement of Essar Steel in Hazira ( Gujurat), expansion of iron ore pelletising plant of Ardent steel in Keonjhar Odisha.
Kamdhenu Ispat has proposed to expand its ingot capcity from 22,556 TPA to 1,24,800 TPA and to produce 96,000 TPA of TMT Bar, Angle & Channel in its Alwar Rajastan plant. Similarly Essar Steel has plans to replace the Electric Arc furnace by Basic Oxygen Furnace in Hazira, Gujarat.
