In a recent ‘Steel and Steel Products(Quality Control) Order, 2015’ dated 16.12.2015, BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification has been made mandatory for all steel industry participants. As per the notification, steel producers, importers and exporters have to comply with BIS in order to carry out steel trade in Indian territory.
The notification issued will be applicable after three months from the date of its publication in official gazette.
According to industry participants, this BIS certification will act as a hindrance in import of flat and long steel products as there are many international steelmakers, who doesn’t have BIS license. It will also hurt the small and medium manufacturers in India, who doesn’t have BIS license.
Mr Nikunj Turakhia, Director of BIMA said, “It is unfortunate for Indian steel industry, which is already struggling with low quality raw material to implement BIS in present state”
