Government Takes Initiative to Promote Solar Panels

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing two national level programmes. The 1st one is Grid Connected Rooftop and Small Solar Power Plants Programme and the 2nd is Off-Grid & Decentralized Solar Applications. The government is planning to promote installation of solar rooftop systems on the roofs of residential and other buildings in the country.

The Minister further said that there is a provision for subsidy of 30% for general category states/UTs, 70% for grid connected solar rooftop and 90% for off-grid solar applications for special category states and Islands of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep in the country. The large and major industries do require large utilization of power. However, there is no provision of subsidy to industries for reducing power requirement to half. The government is, however, encouraging power saving through energy efficiency and conservation measures, the Minister added.

India is also planning to produce around 25 times more solar in next 7 years and much of this will be through solar parks.

From a capacity today of a mere 2,900 MW, India is reaching for 100 GW, which means it must add 15 GW of capacity annually for 7 years. No country has ever done this before. Germany, the world’s 2nd largest solar producer, has less than 40 GW capacity today and China, the world’s largest solar country, has a little of over 40 GW.
