Tata Steel, India’s leading steel maker did not source any iron ore or pellet rake from merchant market in Nov’15. As per the railway movement tracked by SteelMint the steel biggy did not procure any rake of iron ore or pellets from merchant market last month. Company’s iron ore imports also remained nil in Nov’15.
In Nov’15, Tata Steel produced around 704,488 MT iron ore from its Joda mines in Odisha against 691,000 MT in Oct’15.
In Oct’15, Tata Steel had moved 10 rakes of iron ore from miners namely NMDC and Rungta Mines. Apart from this the steel maker also procured 39 rakes of pellet from pellet makers namely Jindal Steel and Power, Adhunik Metaliks and Brahmani River Pellets.
Last month Tata Steel started its new green field project in Odisha-Kalinganagar Steel plant which has a capacity of 6 MnT pa and will produce 3 MnT pa crude steel in its first phase. This project will further augment its Indian crude steel production to 13 MnT pa. Its Jamshedpur steel plant has a capacity of 9.7 MnT pa. Tata Steel’s crude steel production stood at 4.85 MnT in H1 FY16 (up by 5% Y-o-Y).
Tata Steel procures iron ore from its mines in Jharkhand and Odisha. Its Noamundi mines in Jharkhand has a capacity of producing 10 MnT pa iron ore. The steel maker had raised its iron ore and pellet procurement from merchant market after Jharkhand High Court stopped dispatches of iron ore from its Noamundi mines in beginning of Aug’15.
Later towards the end of Sept’15, Jharkhand HC allowed resumption of operations at Noamundi mines. Following this the steel biggy has reduced its purchases in Oct’15 and in Nov’15 the steel maker did not procure any material from the merchant market.
