Centre Plans Increment in Production from Chhattisgrah’s Kusmunda Coal Mines

Coal India has proposed to expand coal production capacity from Kusmunda mine in Chhattisgarh. The proposal was rejected earlier by panel from Environment Ministry on grounds of trespass of environmental laws.

CIL, the largest coal producer in India, is to enhance coal production from Kusmunda coal mine located in Korba district of Chhattisgarh. Kusmunda is a opencast coal mine operated under control of SECL. It has a annual production capacity of 18.75 MnT.

The company is planning to enhance its production capacity and has floated a tender for the same in Sept’15.

It should be noted that SECL obtained environmental clearence for increment of coal production capacity from 15 to 18.75 MnT in Feb’14. Later, expert committee, constituted by Environment Ministry to check pros and cons has clearly rejected SECL’s proposal for further expansion of Kusmunda coal mine in Chhattisgarh.

The committee recommended that the mine is violating environmental enjoins as per norms of ministry. Further, the team cited that the mine has failed to sustain air and water quality in area of its operation.
