Indian Coal Imports fall 11.2% M-o-M

India’s monthly coal imports fall again by 11.2% in Sept’15, the lowest monthly import of the country since Mar’14.

India, world’s third largest coal importer, has witnessed a rapid fall again in Sept’15 coal imports. It is the sharpest and the 2nd significant drop in more than a year since Mar’14. The country has imported about 15.1 MnT at the end of the month, which is 19.7% lower than import of Sept’14.

Rise in domestic supply by CIL, sluggish demand owing to poor industrial movement, constant devaluation in INR which plunged to its lowest in Aug’15 since 2013, is influencing Indian buyers to reduce their imports.

Earlier, the Indian ministry had increased auction quantity from CIL to 10% for FY16l. It was restricted to 7% in the previous fiscal. Rise in domestic supply is proving sufficient for the industry majors of the country, and they are being less dependent on imports.

As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total coal import, the country imported around 10.9 MnT of non-coking coal, which fell about 11% against the 12.3 MnT imported in Aug’15; about 3.9 MnT coking coal, registering a fall of about 8% compared to last month, and about 0.11 MnT coke was imported by the country which registered a sharp fall by 64% compared to last month.
