Vedanta Ltd (formerly known as Sesa Sterlite/Sesa Goa) is likely to resume iron ore mining operations at its Codli mines in Goa next week, however the actual operations will begin post monsoon in Sept’15.
The mining company has a permission to mine 5.5 MnT pa of the total permitted 20 MnT capacity for iron ore production in Goa by the Supreme Court. Actual production from mines will resume in Sept’15, a company official said.
“As of now, approvals have been obtained for Codli mine, which has 3 leases and 3 MnT permissible production capacity (out of 5.5 MnT pa),” said Mr. Anil Agarwal, founder & chairman of the company.
“After a struggle of almost three years of mining suspension in Goa, in spite of falling prices, Sesa Goa business of Vedanta Limited is making its best efforts to restart mining operations in Goa,” said A N Joshi, head – corporate affairs – Sesa Iron Ore Business.
Vedanta Ltd has remained India’s largest private sector iron ore exporter but its operations were impacted by suspension of iron ore mining activities. Mining operations in Goa have remained suspended since last 3 years as Goa government temporarily suspended iron ore mining in September 2012, pending verification of documents in the wake of Justice M B Shah Commission’s report.
