Coal Production in US Registers a Decline in June’15 by 16% Y-o-Y

US, the most significant participant in coal production, has witnessed continuous downfall in coal production in last three months, produced 74.3, 69.8 and 66.4 mmst of coal in  Apr, May and June’15 respectively.

EIA’s (US Energy Information Agency) latest release has revealed that coal production in US has fallen for three consecutive months, witnessing a downfall of 4% M-o-M in June’15. It had produced about 69.8 mmst of coal in May’15, whereas, had registered a downfall of about 16% Y-o-Y basis by producing 66.4 mmst of coal in June’15 against 79 mmst of coal in June’14 .

Weekly Review Of Coal Production in US :

United States has produced 5% more coal in current week compared to16.4 MnT in week 18. The nation produced about 17.2 MnT of coal in week 29.

Reasons for Falling Coal Production:  

  1. Continuous downfall in prices of gas making it a cheaper source of energy compared to coal
  2.  Evolution of more gas operated power plants in the United States.
  3.  Falling coal demand.
  4. Strict rules and regulation against air pollution by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has compelled power players to use gas and other renewable sources of energy.
