Trucks Carrying Iron Ore in Odisha

8 Day Long Odisha Transport Strike Called Off

The eight day long strike of Odisha based transporters against the state government’s decision to fix a ceiling on transportation charges ended today. However, sources mentioned that transportation is yet to resume in regions of Koira and Keonjhar. Mr Bhakta, President of Joda Truck association said, “We have resumed transporting material from today second half. Prices will remain the same. Freight fixed by the govt will be applicable from govt order date after all associations agree to it. We are yet to decide on the govt proposed freight.”

The strike started on 20 July, in order to oppose state government’s decision to fix a ceiling on transportation charges. Odisha government has fixed a ceiling charge of INR 5.70 to 6.00/MT per km of a maximum on transport rates for domestic movement, which is currently around INR 9.00-12.00/MT per km.

The transport strike badly impacted the movement of minerals. The strike hit iron ore dispatches by about 5,00,000 MT in just eight days. On an average, South Eastern Railway zone carries 25-30 iron ore rakes daily. But, owing to the transport strike only 12-15 rakes were loaded daily.
