Aditya Birla Group flagship company and India’s top Aluminum producer and company, Hindalco has curtailed Aluminum production at its Hirakud smelter owing to limited supply of coal and some logistic problems. The coal problem of the company has been aggravated after it lost the Talabira coal block.
Although, the company had bagged 3 coal blocks in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh in the e-auction held in last February, it has indicated that it’ll bid for few other coal blocks also in the coming auction. The company is ramping up its smelting capacity to 213,000 MT at its Hirakud plant.
“We have curtailed production at our Hirakud smelter due to limited supply of coal after we lost the Talabira block along with some logistics problem. Our annual coal requirement is 16.5 MnT, but the coal blocks we have bagged in the auction will not be sufficient to meet the requirement, so we’ll definitely participate in the upcoming coal block auctions,” said Mr Satish Pai, Deputy Managing Director, Hindalco Industries.
However, he declined to inform about the size of the production cut.
