Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar Project Receives EC Extension till 2016

Tata Steel’s 6 MnT pa steel plant based in Kalinganagar, Odisha received an EC extension for 5 years.

Environmental clearance (EC) for Tata Steel’s 6 MnT pa integrated steel plant at Kalinganagar, Odisha has been extended till 6 Nov’16. EC for the project was granted on 7 Nov’06 for five years, which was expired on 6 Nov’11.

Tata Steel has applied for extension of environmental clearance on 15 Apr’15 to the union Environmental & Forest Ministry. In its application, the project proponent has informed that the project is ready in all respects with an investment of INR 250 billion.

Commissioning to be Delayed

Grant of environment clearance extension is crucial for commissioning the integrated steel project, which has already missed its original deadline. However, all have to wait for another 7-10 months or even more to see the commissioning of the project. In the last week of January, Tata Steel informed the Ministry of Environment & Forest that it would take minimum 200 days (7 months) to start all the units of Phase-1 from the first day of the coke oven battery heating.
