India’s coal dispatches rise nearly 9% y-o-y in Jan’23

India’s coal dispatches in January 2023 increased by 8.5% y-o-y to 82 million tonnes (mnt). Meanwhile, dispatches rose by 4% m-o-m as per data maintained with CoalMint.

The rise in offtake is in line with the increase in coal production. In January 2023, India’s coal production was 90 mnt, a 13% increase over the previous year.

This means that the country’s inventory grew by 8 mnt. However, in January 2022, the country’s production was 4 mnt more than dispatches.

The increase in inventory as compared to last year demonstrates India’s readiness to meet its growing energy needs, especially during the summer when coal demand is higher than production.

Company-wise dispatches

Quantity in mnt
India’s total coal dispatches in FY23 (April 2022–January 2023) were 720 mnt, an increase of 7.5% y-o-y. Meanwhile, Coal India Ltd’s (CIL’s) offtake registered a growth of 6% y-o-y in January 2023.

BCCL has the highest y-o-y growth rate among Coal India’s subsidiaries, at around 13%. In terms of volume, MCL’s offtake increased by 14 mnt to 161 mnt in the this period.

Captive miners have grown by 28% y-o-y in ten months of FY23. However, SCCL’s dispatches were almost similar in volume as compared to the last year.

Dispatches to non-power sector up 11%

Coal offtake by the non-power sector rose by 11% y-o-y to 14 mnt in January 2023. However, overall dispatches during April 2022–January 2023, dropped by 7% y-o-y to 110.6 mnt. It happened because coal allocation to the non-power sector was curtailed during the summer amid high power demand.

Moreover, coal offtake to the power sector increased by 11% y-o-y to 67.7 mnt in January 2023.  Meanwhile, during April 2022-January 2023, coal allocation to the power sector was 609 mnt, a 10.5% y-o-y rise.
