As per government’s plan to over come the challenge of domestic Coal shortage, India’s largest Power producer, NTPC, will import about 22 MnT of Coal in current fiscal.
Amid Coal ministry putting all its efforts towards reducing the dependency of Indian Power utilities on imported coal, Indian government has targeted an import of about 73 MnT of Coal in FY16 for various boards and Power utilities operating in the country.
Indian government has reduced total Coal import target for Power utilities to 73 MnT against 91.2 MnT in FY15. However, the target for NTPC solely has been increased by about 45% compared to its 15 MnT target in FY15. It should be noted that NTPC had imported about 10.8 MnT of Steam coal in FY14 against 9.9 MnT in FY13.
Ministry of Power has released a list of 37 different Boards & Utilities, mentioning their Coal import target for FY16, NTPC topping the list with a target of 22 MnT.

According to SteelMint research, India had imported about 183 MnT of Steam Coal in the last fiscal and about 15 MnT has already been imported in April’15, major share of import i.e 78% being from Indonesia.

NTPC’s Imported Coal supply increased by 6.6 MnT during April-Dec’14
In a recent conference call, NTPC mentioned receiving increased supply of Coal during April-Dec 2014 against same period in corresponding year. A total quantity of 165.7 MnT was supplied to NTPC during Apr-Dec’14 as compared to 154.1 MnT during Apr-Dec’13.
Out of this, supply of imported coal was 16.3 MnT and domestic at 149.4 MnT, which was 9.7 MnT and 144.4 MnT during Apr-Dec’13.
