Odisha’s December mining revenue drops 11%

Due to crackdown on
mining in Odisha not only the miners are having a tough time but the state
government has also loosing large amount of mining revenue. The Odisha
government has failed to meet the December mining revenue target. While the mining
revenue target for the month was Rs.492 crore the actual collection was only Rs.438
crore a shortfall of 11%.

Similarly, while the mining
revenue target for the April-December period was Rs. 4102 crore, the actual
collection was only Rs.3803.62 crore, a shortfall of 7.2%. However, the mining
revenue for the period April-December 2011 was Rs.3237.43 crore.

The fall in revenue is due to mostly the fall in iron ore production,
which is expected to come down to 45 million tonnes this fiscal against the
average annual production of more than 75 million tonnes. Also due to closure
of major mines, it is expected that the state will lose the annual mineral
revenue target.

The state’s iron ore revenue collection was 1764.45 crore in 2010-11 and
2849.89 crore in 2011-12. In the current fiscal iron ore revenue collection was
1951.44 crore up to October.
