India: Goa govt. invites bids for grant of five iron ore mine blocks

Goa is notifying 5 leases on the back of a successful auction in December where premiums crossed the 100 percent mark.

The five new mines, include three that will not need fresh environment, forest or mining plan and can operate with the earlier limits. The list includes the Surla- Sonshi mine of Vedanta, which had in December bid for its own mine in Bicholim. A government official noted how despite the propagated fear that large “outside” companies, with deep pockets would displace Goan miners, it was the incumbents who fought each other to win rights to the mines, auctioned in the first tranche.

The last date for the purchase of tender document is 17 Mar’23 and last date for bid submission is 27 Mar’23.

Eighty eight operating mines in Goa had been issued notices under 12 (1) (hh), allowing the state government to take possession of these areas. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has promised to auction all leases by March 31. Goa hopes to bring back the state’s production to a 30 million tonne production for which the state is seeking Supreme Court’s permission.
