The high level panel headed by the Development Commissioner, UN Behera is scheduled a meeting today to take a call on the fate of as many as 29 mining leases awaiting renewal. The Odisha government has constituted the panel in March to consider extension of mining leases under the new MMDR ordinance.
The 29 mines include 18 Iron ore and Manganese mines that have been closed after the Supreme Court’s order in May’14. Since the mining ordinance has done away with the concept of renewal of lapsed leases, the panel will examine the eligibility of mines to grant extension. As per the ordinance, captive mines will be given extension till Mar’30 and the merchant mines till Mar’20 and after that the mines will be put on auction.
To decide the fate of these mines, the Odisha government in February had sought for additional two months time from the Supreme Court as the scrutiny of mines will need additional time in the aftermath of the new mining ordinance.
Recently, MoEF has extended forest clearance for 82 mines across India. Mines that got clearances in Odisha are Kathpal Chromite Mine of M’s.
