Though, NMDC's total production capacity was increased from 242 lakh tons in 2005-06 to 320 lakh tons in 2007-08, its output was hampered due to evacuation constraints in Bailadila (Chhattisgarh).

NMDC Director (Finance) S Thiagarajan told PTI that the 13% fall in iron ore output during Arp-Dec 2012 is expected to be achieved at 272 lakh tons (last fiscals output) by end of current fiscal on account of better evacuation system in Bailadila (Chhattisgarh).

In Apr-Dec 12, output reduced to 175.56 lakh tons that was 202.79 lakh tons before a year.

Iron ore production by NMDC: 320 lakh tons in 2007-08, 285 lakh tons in 2008-09, 238 lakh tons in 2009-10, 252 lakh tons in 2010-11 and 272.6 lakh tons in 2011-12 (in 2011-12 – growth of 8% over 2001-11).

In December, NMDC's output improved by 8.5% to 22.34 lakh tons. Over 2001-11.

India has 285,260 lakh tons of proven reserves. NMDC's targeted output of 45 mt p.a by 2015-16 depends on development of Kumarswamy deposit and 11B deposit (which includes 15,650 lakh tons iron ore reserves) being developed in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka as on Mar 31, 2011.
