India: Odisha HC further extends Jindal Steel’s Plea on liquidation of Iron Ore (Updated)

Odisha High Court extended  Jindal Steel & Power Ltd’s (JSPL) plea over liquidation of around 10 MnT Iron ore stocks lying at Sarda Mines.

Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) had filed a petition against Odisha government in  July’14 for liquidation of Iron ore stocks at Sarda Mines. The hearing, which was scheduled for today, i.e 18 Mar’15 has been further extended to 25th March 2015.

The Odisha high court has scheduled the next hearing of the Thakurani iron ore mines case on 25th of this month after the central government failed to submit its response. The Odisha government has already submitted its response on the plea of Jindal Steel and Power ltd.(JSPL) for liquidation of around 10 MnT of Iron ore lying at the mine.

Hearing the case a high court bench comprising of justice Indrajit Mohanty and justice Viswanath Mohapatra has scheduled the next hearing on 25th and has asked the centre to file its response on that day.

Operation at the mines has been stopped since 2014 April following the expiry of environmental clearance. The state government had also stopped transportation of stocked minerals from the mines. However, challenging this decision JSPL has filed a petition in the Odisha high court. Later last year the company had also filed an additional affidavit in the court citing that Sarda mines has been granted Environmental clearance for Thakurani-b mines and on the basis of this mining should be allowed at the mines.

JSPL’s  operational Tensa Mines has a capacity of 2-2.5 MnT pa, but it is is not enough to run their9 MnT Pellet plant in Barbil (Odisha). Since mining operations were suspended at Sarda Mines, JSPL has been facing shortage of Iron ore and is dependent on merchant miners like Rungta, Serajuddin & OMC to source Iron ore.
