- China’s Baosteel has launched a new project called the ‘Zhanjiang Iron and Steel zero carbon high grade sheet steel plant project’.
- The existing plant of Zhanjiang Iron and Steel on Donghai island, Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone, is the construction site of the project.
- The project will help implement and achieve the carbon emission reduction goal proposed by the company.
The project focuses on building a 220 tonnes (t) electric furnace, a direct reduced iron conveying system, and a steel slag processing and production line. The continuous casting machine and electric furnace will have a capacity to produce 1.8 million tonnes (mnt) per annum, and also an additional capacity of 1.8 mnt/year. The slabs produced will be sent to hot-rolling process for use.
Furthermore, the company aims to achieve carbon peaking in 2023, reduce carbon intensity by 30% in 2035, followed by carbon neutrality by 2050.
