India’s base metals (aluminium, zinc, copper, lead) production data for October, 2022, released recently, shows that output of major metals (aluminium and zinc) has risen m-o-m, while copper has shown a dip of 1% m-o-m.
- Aluminium production rises m-o-m
Production of aluminium was at 341,000 tonnes (t) in October, a marginal rise of 2% as against 334,000 t in the previous month.
Total production in January-October, 2022 stood at 3.38 million tonnes (mnt), SteelMint notes.
Company-wise break up
Vedanta produced 143,000 t in October, a rise of 1,000 t as against September, while Hindalco produced 113,000 t, a rise of 4,000 t m-o-m.
On the other hand, Balco’s production was at 47,000 t, an increase of 1,000 t m-o-m. Nalco’s production stood at 38,000 t in October, a rise of 1,000 t as against 37,000 t in September 2022.
The capacity utilisation of both companies menioned above was almost 100% in October 2022.
- Copper production falls slightly
The production of copper (ore and semi-finished) was at 313,000 t in October, 2022, a marginal fall of 3,000 t m-o-m as against 316,000 t in September.
Semi-finished copper production was at 0.05 mnt whereas ores contributed 0.27 mnt.
Total production in January-October, 2022 stood at 2.90 mnt, SteelMint’s data shows.
Company-wise break up
Sterlite Industries, Hindalco Industries and Hindustan Copper are major producers of refined copper in India.
Hindustan Copper produced 268,000 t during the month under review, stable m-o-m, while Hindalco produced 34,000 t, a drop of 1,000 t m-o-m. Sesa Sterlite’s production stood at 11,000 t, a decrease of 2,000 t m-o-m.
- Zinc production rises m-o-m
In India, the main producer of zinc is Hindustan Zinc (HZL). The government of India holds 29.54% in the company.
The total volume of zinc production by HZL was recorded at 70,000 t in October, a rise of 11% as against 63,000 t in September.
Total production in January-October, 2022 stood at 676,000 t, SteelMint’s data reveals.
- Lead production remains firm
The production of lead in October was at 16,000 t, similar to what was produced in September.
