The spurt in manufacturing activities after the festive holidays has pushed India’s thermal coal imports. About 4.8 million tonnes (mnt) of imported coal is arriving at Indian ports between 28 October-15 November, 2022, CoalMint’s vessel line-up data shows.
Around same time last month, about 4.2 mnt of coal had arrived at Indian ports.
Out of the total, thermal coal volumes are at 2.8 mnt, with shipments from Indonesia occupying the top spot, followed by Australia and the US.
Coking coal volumes comprise 26% of the total quantity set to arrive, with shipments originating from the US and Australia being the highest.
Around 0.3 mnt of met coke is set to arrive, while 0.1 mnt of pet coke will be sourced by Shree Cement, Ramco Cement, and Ultratech Cement.
Thermal coal vessel arrivals

Indonesian coal to the tune of 1.5 mnt is set to arrive at Indian ports, with Adani Enterprise being the highest receiver, followed by JSW Steel and Agarwal Coal. Shipments from Indonesia are higher compared to other countries as Indonesian coal is relatively cheaper.
Adani Enterprise is also sourcing 0.3 mnt of Australian and 0.2 mnt of Mozambican coal.
Bhushan Power And Steel and Rashmi Group are bringing in 0.2 mnt of Russian coal in the coming weeks, data shows.
A strong rise in domestic coal output and dispatch volumes in the last few months has resulted in lower imports of thermal coal into India.
Coking coal and met coke
Coking coal supplies from Australia are meant for Tata Steel, and Bengal Energy among others. RINL and SAIL are the highest receivers of US coking coal.
A total of 0.3 mnt of met coke, on the other hand, is set to arrive at Indian ports from China, Japan, Colombia and Poland.
