India: Pet coke sales fall 16% in Aug’22 amid low monsoon demand

India’s domestic petroleum coke sales fell by 16% m-o-m to 0.72 mnt in August 2022. The drop in sales can be attributed to reduced demand from the cement sector due to the ongoing monsoons.

However, on a cumulative basis, for April-August 2022,  the same has seen a double-digit growth of 12% y-o-y.

On a monthly basis, the highest growth was recorded by CPCL followed by MRPL. The maximum negative growth was recorded by RIL, followed by IOCL. The main reason was that RIL used petcoke for its own consumption in its gasification unit and released less petcoke in the market. Further, sales by IOCL reduced due to the shutdown of its Paradip refinery from beginning of August.

Rajasthan continues to be the leader amongst all the states where domestic sales were the highest for August. This is because of the concentration of various cement plants in the state , which source primarily from domestic producers apart from importing. The other states in the top 5, in order of quantity, were Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

On a monthly basis, amongst the top 10 states, maximum growth was recorded by Karnataka during August due to the increase in sales from MRPL which reached around 70,000 t in FY2022-23.

This was followed by Odisha whereas, Chhattisgarh recorded a maximum negative growth followed by Madhya Pradesh.

On a cumulative basis, for the period April-August 2022, the highest growth was recorded by Andhra Pradesh followed by Madhya Pradesh. The maximum negative growth was seen in  Rajasthan for the above period as compared to the same period of last year due to comparatively lower domestic sales, particularly in August 2022 due to lower demand in the monsoon period.
