India: Bulk Ship Breaking Prices down by USD 15-20/MT W-o-W

Ship breaking prices in Alang (Gujarat), Asia’s largest ship recycling yard, have noticed a fall of USD 15-20/MT this week. Current offers for Box ship are assessed at USD 415/MT and for Dry ship at USD 390/MT; down by USD 15-20/MT. Volatility in Indian currency and low demand from Pakistan and Bangaldesh have led to increased supply in the global market. Also, falling Indian currency is one the reasons that ship recyclers are not willing to take positions in Indian Market.

Market participant also highlighted that delivery of imported containerized Scrap, which were booked in November/December will be made in January. Ship Plates and melting Scrap prices in Alang also down by INR 400/MT W-o-W. Domestic HMS prices have also fallen by INR 300-800/MT in India.

Alang is the largest ship recycling yard in Asia, which handled about 305 ships in 2013 and about 285 ships in 2014 (till Jan’14-Dec’14). Alang is also a major source for Scrap generation in India.
