South Korea: POSCO commences BF, casting and rolling operations at Pohang

Steel giant POSCO has commenced normal operations at blast furnace 3 at Pohang and is now focussing on continuing casting and rolling operations.

Notably, all the blast furnaces are now operating at the Pohang works. On 12 September, POSCO got into restoring  steelmaking and casting facilities to treat the molten iron produced in the blast furnace in the steelmaking process. This was after a major typhoon and fire incident at the site.

The rolling mill-1 and heavy plate mill-3 have been drained out and turned on. They suffered the most from flooding as they were situated near Naengcheon and 80% of the drainage work of the rolling line was completed.

Furthermore, to stabilise the demand and supply for customers, POSCO has decided to operate an emergency shipment response team from today. It plans to ship the inventory in hand and intends to convert the Gwangyang works to the largest production system by adjusting the repair schedule and responding to first customer’s emergency.

POSCO believes that potential risk such as safety awareness due to delayed recovery may arise; therefore, the company is trying its best to educate workers on electric shock and gas leakage following the restart after flooding.
