The contract price for Australian thermal coal by Glencore and Japan’s Tohoku Electric Power is heard to be fixed at $375/t for 2022, significantly higher from $110/t in 2021 and $69/t in 2020, sources informed. Japanese utilities make bulk purchases from Australia at this contract price which is finalised every year. The sharp rise in contract prices this year is likely to raise power tariff in Japan.
