India: SAIL-BSP steel production impacted as multiple BFs go under repair

Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL’s) Bhilai Steel Plant, located in central India, has shutdown its blast furnaces 1, 6 and 7 for capital repairs due to shortage of coke, SteelMint learned from media sources.

As a result, hot metal production has come down to less than 11,000 tonnes per day (tpd) from 19,000 tpd. Moreover, with the decline in production, the company decided to commence repairs at other major units.

For instance, the plate mill, that has an annual production capacity of 9.5 lakh tonnes for rolling plates upto 3,600mm in width, is likely to shut down for repairs at the end of this month. Rolled plates from this mill are used in manufacturing submarines, bridges, warships, airplanes and were even used in Chandrayaan, India’s own lunar mission.

SAIL’s crude steel production rose by 14% to 17.36 mnt in FY22 compared to 15.21 mnt in FY21.
