Chhattisgarh based Sponge & Steel units had significantly increased their purchases of Iron ore from NMDC in the month of Oct’14.
According to railways data maintained by SteelMint, it is observed that total movement of Iron ore from NMDC’s Baildila mines to CG based units increased by 50%. Whereas, movement from Odisha had fallen by 20% in Oct’14.
It was reported that NMDC dispatched 115 rakes of Iron ore in the month of Oct’14, which increased against 76 rakes in the month of Sep’14. Iron ore supply from Odisha to Chhattisgarh had fallen by 20% M-o-M. Total 132 rakes were supplied in the month of Oct’14 against 165 rakes in Sep’14. Every rake carries approximately 3,850 MT.
Most of the Sponge iron units in Chhattisgarh reported that amid falling Iron ore supply and high prices in Odisha, steel units prefer NMDC ore. Net landed cost of NMDC’s Sponge sized (5-18 mm) lump to Raipur is around INR 7,800- 8,500/MT (including royalty, transporting and crushing charges) against INR 8,500-8,600/MT for almost same grade from Odisha based miners.
“Currently, it is viable to source Iron ore (both lump & fines) from NMDC because of availability and prices. There are hardly any offers from Odisha based miners and whoever is offering, is providing at very high rates,” said a Sponge manufacturer based in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
