Japan: JERA shuts down 500 MW power plants post fire accident

Japan’s biggest power generator JERA has shut down a 500 megawatt (MW) unit at its Chiba thermal power station following a fire incident. The unprecedented situation has raised fears of an electricity crunch in the country as the ministry had already announced tight energy supplies during the peak summer season this year. Authorities had issued a daily warning for possible power shortages as the country suffered its worst June heat over 147 years.
