South Korea: POSCO invests in electric furnaces with focus on reducing carbon emissions

South Korea’s POSCO has recently signed an agreement with foreign facility companies for the installation of electric-arc furnaces (EAFs) at its steel works by CY25 and CY27.

The steelmaker is looking for preheated electric furnaces with continuous charge of scrap, however, there are chances of choosing Konsteel and Quantum electric furnaces. Also, it is in consultation with some overseas facility suppliers including SPCO and SMS.

Focus on reducing carbon emission
POSCO focuses on reducing the carbon emissions with the installation of electric furnaces. The steel major is looking for a continuous electric-arc furnace that can charge and evacuate scrap rather than a method in which scrap is continuously charged from the upper part and pour out molten iron. Also, it is looking for a closed structure that could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by minimising the contact with oxygen.

Furthermore, POSCO is considering to build Korea’s largest electric furnace with a capacity of 300 t of primary charge and 2.5 mnt per annum of steel, by making it equal to the converter’s primary charge capacity without down-processing.

The growing demand for steel products with reduced carbon emissions from domestic and international customers has made POSCO to invest in large electric furnaces.
