India: Coal Ministry targets 140 mnt coking coal output by FY30

The Ministry of Coal has set a target of 140 mnt of coking coal production by FY30. Of this, output of 105 mnt would come from state-run miner Coal India. Coking coal is a key raw material for steelmaking but due to its domestic shortage, the country is dependent on imports. In FY22, coking coal output was at 51.37 mnt (which accounted for a mere 7% of the total coal production in the country) while a quantity of 52.91 mnt was imported to satiate the additional demand.
