India: Locals oppose OMC’s Expansion Plan at Daitari Mines

Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) faces stiff resistance from the local villagers while acquiring forest land for expansion of Daitari mines in Rebena Reserve Forest in Jajpur District.

Bhubaneswar:  Residents of the nearby Bareigoda Panchayat on Friday opposed the company’s move to acquire for forest land for opening new mines in Daitari sector in the public hearing. OMC has applied for conversion of 617 hectares of forest land to non-forest land for mining purposes in Daitari Iron ore mines.

The people alleged that the company has done nothing for the development of local people and environment.

The opposition of locals has made things difficult for OMC to increase production at its Daitari mines within the stipulated time frame. In the current year, OMC plans to produce 3 MnT of Iron ore from Daitari mines, which will be doubled to 6 MnT by FY19.
