India: JSW to import 0.2 MnT Iron Pellet from Oman

JSW Steel, Nation’s largest steel producer in terms of installed capacity (14.3 MnT pa), is importing 0.2 MnT Iron Pellet from Oman for the 1st time in FY15.

The superior quality DR grade Pellets (Fe 67%) has been imported from world’s largest Pellet producer – Vale, having 9 MnT pa Pellet making plant in Oman.

The material has been loaded at Sohar port; unloading port is JSW Dharamtar port (having its own jetty) in Mumbai. Two vessels carrying 55,000 MT Pellet are at berth. While, couple of other vessels carrying similar quantity are expected to arrive on 10 & 13 Oct, 2014 respectively.

Vale’s Pellet will be used for JSW’s Dolvi (Maharashtra) plant which has 3.3 MnT pa steelmaking capacities. The landed cost of Pellet stands at nearly INR 8,200/MT (USD 134/MT).

JSW prefer to import this material because of its high quality, which would generate lesser slag and result in high yield finished material at a competitive price. Procurement of Pellet having Fe 63% from Mangalore based KIOCL would cost (landed) about INR 8,250/MT (USD 135/MT) to JSW.
