Indian Coal Imports surge by 4.5% M-o-M

Indian coal imports have risen by 4.5% against Aug’14 to around 18.8 MnT at 28 major ports in September, according to data managed by CoalMint.

Coal imports in Sep’14 includes 15 MnT of Non-coking coal (up by 4.5%), 3.6 MnT Coking coal; up by 4% against Aug’14 and 0.16 MnT of Met coke.

Mundra port on India’s West Coast in Sep’14 has received the highest coal shipment of 3.1 MnT; down by 9.3% in comparison to August, followed by Paradip in East Coast at 1.6 MnT; up by 8.5% from August.

In Sep’14, Gangavaram port on East Coast has received the highest shipment of 0.7 MnT Coking coal; up by 37% against Aug’14.

The surveyed ports includes Kandla, Mundra, Bhavnagar, Pipavav, Bedi, Magdalla, Dahej, Dharamtar, Haji Bunder, Jaigarh, Goa, Mangalore, Tuticorin, Ennore, Karaikal, Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Gangavaram, Vizag, Paradip, Haldia, Dhamra, Hazira, Navlakhi, Dharamtar Ispat, Cochin, Dighi, Revdanda and Porbandar.

Most of coal was imported from Indonesia, South Africa, Australia & US.

The Supreme Court’s verdict on cancellation of all coal blocks (except 4) may lead to more imports, provided cancelled blocks, which may handed over to CIL (Coal India Ltd), fails to start operations till it get auctioned.

India had imported 172-173 MnT of coal in FY14 and 145 MnT in the previous fiscal.
