India: Tata’s Iron Ore Import Vessel to arrive at Krishnapatnam Port

Tata’s 2nd largest Iron ore shipment vessel carrying 166,036 MT of raw material is expected to arrive today at Krishnapatnam port.

Earlier in Jul’14, the steel biggie had imported 168,832 MT raw material, making it its largest import vessel till date. As of 24 Sep, 2014 India has imported 2.9 MnT ore (including Pellets) in this financial year and 0.23 MnT is expected to arrive by month-end.

Tata continues to import Iron ore amid scarcity of raw material prevailing in the domestic market and has imported 0.73 MnT ore till now in this fiscal year. Its another import vessel named ‘Else’ carrying 166,036 MT ore from Brazil is expected to arrive today by 6 p.m. at Krishnapatnam port. The company was hit badly after closure of its captive mines in Odisha & Jharkhand and has been importing raw material from Australia & South Africa since the beginning of FY15.

Other reasons that have supported imports include favorable exchange rate and plunge in spot Iron ore prices, which are currently trading at 5 years low. Today, Spot Iron ore fines (Fe 62%) have fallen by USD 1/MT and is at USD 79/MT.
