India: JSL imports 20,000 MT Chrome Concentrate from South Africa

Jindal Stainless Limited has imported Chrome Concentrate to blend with Lumpy Chrome ore on a trial basis, as they want to explore various sources for procuring Chrome ore.

A vessel named MV. African Eagle, carrying 20,000 MT of Chrome Concentrate has arrived at Paradip port and unloading is underway. The landed to plant cost for this material is approximately INR 14,500/MT for 38-40 grade.

There has been shortage of Chrome ore in the market after closure of some mines. Earlier, on the order of Supreme Court, the Odisha government had taken steps to close operations at 3 Chrome mines located in Sukinda Chrome Valley in Jajpur district. The mines include Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chrome mines, Kamarda Chrome mines of BC Mohanty & Sons. Prolonged closure of these mines will compel the buyers, which were usually dependent on Tata, to move towards OMC that will intensify the competition in the e-auction and push prices upwards.
