In March 2022, domestic sales of most of the grades of pet coke recorded a sharp rise of 49% m-o-m and by 40% on a y-o-y basis. It also crossed the pre-COVID-19 levels for the second consecutive month, rising by 43% since March 2020.
CPCL recorded the highest growth of 88% during March 2022 due to the low base of last year, followed by MRPL rising by 84%.
Notably, calcined pet coke sales produced by NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Limited) fell by 41% y-o-y amid elevated prices, while on a cumulative basis, for FY’22, its CPC sales declined by 37% y-o-y to 0.08 mnt. Generally, the refinery uses raw petroleum coke to the tune of 75-80% to produce CPC, while the rest is sold to calciners.
RIL’s pet coke sales volumes for March also fell by 24% y-o-y amid its higher usage in the gasification units which lowered the availability for domestic sales.
Percentage share of oil companies for FY’22

It is observed that in FY’22, the highest market share in domestic sales of pet coke was retained by IOCL at 34% followed by Nayara Energy at 24%.
RIL’s share stood at 9%. Despite being the country’s largest pet coke producer, a sharp rise in its sales was capped last year as it released very less quantity in the market due to maximum consumption at its own gasification unit.
State-wise sales
Rajasthan continues to be at the highest for domestic sale for the period FY’22 rising by 61% y-o-y to 1.9 mnt. This is mainly due to the concentration of various cement plants in the state, owned by companies like UltraTech, ACC, Ambuja Cement, etc which are major consumers of pet coke, sourcing primarily from domestic producers.
This is followed by Gujarat, rising by 28% y-o-y to 0.9 mnt, CoalMint data showed.
