Amid India’s ongoing power crisis, the Union Power Ministry has asked the state governments to step up coal imports for the next three years. The government has directed the states to sign long-term deals in a bid to ensure supply and secure lower prices in a volatile market condition. This move came in the wake of power demand peaking across the country during midsummer, recording 201 gigawatts (GW) on 26 Apr’22.
