India: Petro products consumption rises 4% in Apr’21-Jan’22

India’s total consumption of petroleum products in the Apr’21-Jan’22 period stood at 165.7 million tonnes (mnt) against 159 mnt in the same period last year, a y-o-y rise of 4%.

Latest figures available for Jan show that consumption stood at 17.6 mnt, down 4% m-o-m and largely unchanged on a y-o-y basis.

The total consumption of all petroleum products gives the overall consumption in the country, including domestic sales by all oil companies and products imported. These products are used in various applications in different sectors like railways, steel, coal, power, cement etc.

Product-wise consumption (in mnt):

Notably, HSD (high speed diesel), MS (motor spirit), LPG (liquified petroleum gas), naphtha and petcoke contribute to 80% of total petroleum products consumption.

High speed diesel is used mainly as a transportation fuel in rail or road transportation. Motor spirit, on the other hand, is used in private vehicles and two-wheelers, while LPG is majorly used for cooking and in specific industrial applications.

On a cumulative basis for Apr’21-Jan’22, there is a high growth of 44.3% in aviation turbine fuels as its demand has increased considerably with the relaxation in airlines restrictions for both domestic and international destinations.

Motor spirit also has shown a double-digit growth of 12% during the period due to an increase in the use of private vehicles after Covid-19, while LPG has shown a nominal growth of 2%.

Rising demand for pet coke 

Amongst the major products consumed during Jan, pet coke shows a high growth of 41%. It is mainly used by the cement industry. The total domestic sales of pet coke have recorded a 31% growth for Jan and a 25% growth during Apr’21-Jan’22.

Sales from Rajasthan remained the highest at 0.3 mnt in Jan’22, followed by Gujarat at 0.1 mnt.
