South African RB1 (6000 NAR) grade prices rose to $430/t FOB as on 2 Mar’22 in a recent deal, making it one of the most expensive trade ever transacted. Prices moved up by $119/t d-o-d and by over $200/t on w-o-w basis amidst a sharp rise in European coal demand. SWIFT sanctions on Russian banks curtailed transactions from the country, prompting buying countries to look for alternatives in South Africa, Australia, and Indonesia.
