South African RB1 (6000 NAR) grade coal prices rose sharply to $245/t FOB on 24 Feb’22, up $37/t d-o-d amid rising European demand for coal. Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, coal and gas supplies into Europe and several parts of the world are likely to be disrupted. Additionally, with Europe’s sanctions on Russia, the former has increased coal purchases from South Africa.
