China: Higher restocking demand lifts domestic coal prices above govt mandate

China’s domestic thermal coal prices remained strong today, trading above the government price bar, amid increased restocking demand by power utilities. Offer prices for domestic 5500 NAR coal were at RMB 1,100/t ($174/t), above the NDRC mandate of RMB 900/t ($142). Some coastal power plants were heard to be left with 3-4 days of stocks. Coal consumption rose sharply with several companies resuming operations post holidays.
