Australia sees early closure of its largest coal-fired plant

Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant, Eraring, is set to close down in 2025, ahead of its schedule due to its unviability of running operations as against the lower cost of renewables. The plant currently includes four 720-megawatt coal-fired generators and one 42 megawatt diesel generator, supplying a quarter of its electricity to New South Wales. The power plant has been operational for almost 40 years and was due to be decommissioned in 2032.
